Georgian stucco, Victorian terraces, whitewashed cottages. Older buildings behave differently to new ones, and decorating them badly causes damage that takes years to show.

What's different about older buildings

They need to breathe. Solid walls without a cavity manage moisture by letting it pass through. Seal them with the wrong coating and the moisture stays inside, taking the plaster and the timber with it.

The joinery is worth saving. Original sash windows and panelled doors can almost always be repaired and repainted rather than replaced. Careful preparation costs less than a joiner.

Colour matters more. Heritage buildings carry heritage colours. We'll match anything, including the full range from the specialist brands, into trade paint.

Listed buildings and conservation areas: Consent may be required before external work, particularly for colour changes. We'll flag it if we think it applies — but the responsibility sits with the property owner and we'd always suggest checking with your local council first.
